The Planning and Housing Group combines exploration of the city region’s housing needs with analysis of employment trends and the corporate economy to produce evidence and convene partners around long-term spatial planning for the Cambridge city region. This work is vital to ensuring there is adequate infrastructure for good quality of life in the long-term.

Planning and Housing Group Chair: Dr Gemma Burgess, Director of the Cambridge Centre for Housing and Planning Research, University of Cambridge
Dr Gemma Burgess is the Director of the Cambridge Centre for Housing and Planning Research at the University of Cambridge, where she leads a multidisciplinary team working on policy-oriented research projects. Gemma’s research interests include:
- Housing supply and affordability, the planning system, planning obligations, housebuilding
- Housing for an ageing population
- Housing tenure, homelessness, alternative housing models
- Digital innovation, digital inclusion, smart cities, offsite construction, modular housing
Gemma works with a wide variety of public, private and third sector organisations on short term and long term research projects. She is currently a Co-investigator on the £72m Construction Innovation Hub, a partnership between the Centre for Digital Built Britain (CDBB), the Building Research Establishment (BRE), and the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC). The alliance aims to drive transformational innovation in the UK construction industry.
